Apparently some Scotsman, who saw nothing wrong with drinking alcoholic beverages on Sunday, objected to running trains on that day. Those who objected to such Sabbatarianism often did so on the grounds that it prevented many of the less wealthy, who often worked 6 days a week, from having access to healthy pleasures, such as country excursions. A common object of satire was closing pubs on Sunday while permitting private clubs for the very wealthy to serve liquor, but here the targets who get in the way of i progress are mocked for drunkedness.
