Memorial to Richard Whately, Archbishop of Dublin by Sir Thomas Farrell, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin. “A celebrated scholar and essayist, Richard Whately was noted for his cool theological judgement during a turbulent period in the history of the Church of Ireland. He founded the Department of Economics at Trinity College [Dublin]. He was also a notorious eccentric who taught his dog to climb trees. He died in 1863, after 32 years as the Archbishop of Dublin. This monument” by Sir Thomas Farrell, shows the Archbishop wearing what may be the pendant of the Order of St. Patrick.” — information in the Cathedral. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
