Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892), a prelate of the Catholic Churchal initially ordained an Anglican cleric who was aligned with the Tractarian Movement. In 1851 he was received into the Catholic Church and ordained a Catholic priest. He was appointed Archbishop of Westminster in 1865, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in England, and elevated to the rank of Cardinal in 1875. He promoted a Catholic view of social justice. Legros, a Roman Catholic himself, was obviously inspired by Manning and did at least two etchings of him in addition to this medal.
