A soldier has dismounted from his horse, and stops to offer water to a wounded comrade beside a palm tree. The fallen helmet nearby suggests that the foe has come off worse. Wreaths garland the broken columns at each side, which represent life cut short. On these are inscribed the names of other comrades lost in the battle. [Commentary continues below.
