Oval Victorian Post Box with Two Apertures
Handyside & Co, Derby
cast iron
c. 1899
High Holborn, London
This has a little plaque over each aperture, now painted over in red. These would once have read "Town" and "Country." Such post boxes first appeared in London in 1899. This one stands right opposite Alfred Waterhouse's Prudential Assurance building.
