Jerviston railway viaduct, about 1890. Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Jerviston viaduct between Motherwell and Mossend, Lanarkshire, about 1890. The Wishaw & Coltness Railway was built to serve mineral traffic on the Lanarkshire coalfields and was completed in 1844. The Wishaw & Coltness Railway became part of the Caledonian Railway in 1849. Jerviston viaduct, was built with masonry piers and timber arches. It was only in use until 1857, but remained standing until the twentieth century. The timber arches were removed in 1905, and the piers demolished in 1924. The viaduct was also known as the Calder or Globe viaduct. [Click on image to enlarge it.]
