Moving from left to right one perceives the evolution of from designs obviously borrowed from stagecoaches to ones taken from open goods wagons (freight cars) until coaches with compartments and passageways appear. The powder-blue vehicle at the left is a third-class carriage from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (see Nock, pl. 4).
