Mary Magdalene is vividly portrayed in her red robe, with rippling hair and a jar of ointment in her hand. She is generally taken to be the "sinner" who anoints Jesus's feet in the Pharisee's house (Luke 7), and is later described in all the gospel accounts as one of those who visits the tomb after Jesus's entombment, only to find it empty. In two of the gospels (Matthew and John) she is also the first person to whom Jesus appears after death.
