St Elizabeth of Hungary
Designer: (possibly) Mrs Theodore Bouwens
Maker: James Powell & Sons
South Chancel of St Mary Magdalene, Littleton, Surrey
1905
In memory of "SH" who had died in 1893
The text borne by the angels above St Elizabeth is: "In thy presence is fulness of joy," from Psalm 16, 11. The saint herself holds a bowl of roses. According to legend, when she was challenged on suspicion of hiding something precious under her cloak, the bread that she was carrying to give to the poor appeared to turn into white and red roses. The single chancel light here in the Powell Order Book is numbered 698/259. No designer's name is given but it might be (like the two-light one in the chancel, and two others in the church) by Mrs Bouwens, of the local Manor, who was obviously gifted in this way.
