This was one of the works inspired by his visit to America in 1884, in fact one of several worked up from his sketches at that time. It looks remarkably fresh for a reminiscence. The expansive view diminishes the scale of the Falls themselves, although the natural feature still looks impressive because of its width and the plumes of white spray. — Jacqueline Banerjee
