James Northcote, R.A. (1746-1831), a lifesize seated figure by Sir Francis Chantrey. Marble. Exeter Cathedral. [Click on these images to enlarge them.]
Northcote was a portraitist, narrative and genre painter, and author of some distinction (an essayist, anecdotist etc), but a true eccentric, miserly by nature and "small and lean with angular features" (Postle), just as shown here. He was a bachelor, and "left £1000 to the sculptor Francis Chantrey for his monument to be placed in St Andrew's Church, Plymouth" (Postle), though it ended up being installed here, in Exeter Cathedral, instead.
