Bishop Brownlow North (1736-1819)
Francis Chantrey
1825
South Choir aisle, Winchester Cathedral
As half-brother of Lord North, Bishop Brownlow North had a long and distinguished career in the church, and had been (for example) Dean of Canterbury and Bishop of Worcester before becoming Bishop of Winchester in 1781. He is rather amusingly said to have "extracted maximum familial advantage from his long episcopate" (Aston). If Henry Howard's 1818 portrait of the bishop is anything to go by (see Aston), Chantrey's likeness is striking.
