Commentary

He wrenched out that crocodile’s toof! 1893 [sic]. This was the original title as used by Lewis Carroll in Sylvie and Bruno (1889), Chapter XXIV, "The Frog’s Birthday Treat." The artist’s talent for mischievous and fantasy illustration had been well-honed during the period 1881-1889 with his many political and satirical cartoons in the popular London weekly Punch. Carroll, as he noted in his journal of Sunday 1st. March 1885,, had early encountered Furniss’s work there, Lewis Carroll’s Diaries, 8: 169. — Ray Dyer
