The following is a note to Chapter 11 of the author's Navvyman.
In 1922 the Letter printed a piece about a Red Bill Davis who got pneumonia and religion in mountains sounding not unlike those at Kinlochleven. 'Red Bill Davis, so he was called, loud-voiced, rough of speech, and a bully. He cursed God, the weather, the camp, and each individual therein with a fluency that excited our wonder and roused our indignation.' Shooting and cards were what Red Bill delighted in until one cold winter in the mountains he was taken ill and promised to turn to God if he were spared. He was and he did.
