The following is a note to Chapter 17 of the author's Navvyman.
Millar was the man who said, 'Money, money, money is the common cry. We hear nothing of work, work, work.' He thought, too, that the job would get done faster if the company, instead of raising navvies' wages, gave its officers bonuses for the men's good workmanship. The honour of his extra pay, he truly believed, would make men work better.
