With the Queen here is her youngest daughter, and indeed youngest child, Princess Beatrice, who would become Princess Henry of Battenberg in 1885. The composition is an interesting one: the two were indeed very close, but did not always see eye to eye. In particular, the Queen was very much against Beatrice's marriage, until the couple agreed to come and live with her. One day, Princess Beatrice would be Governor of the Isle of Wight, residing at Carisbrooke Castle, not far from the royal residence at Osborne House. Princess Beatrice carried on in her role of her mother's assistant by editing and transcribing her journals, an enormous task. Much has been lost by her abridgments, to the great regret of historians. — Jacqueline Banerjee
