Cylindrical Pillar Box with one side box
Handyside & Co, Derby
cast iron
1887-1901
Mayfield Road, Walton-on-Thames, Surrey
This is an ordinary red cylindrical pillar box, but with a single side-box. The first pillar box on the mainland was erected in 1853 in Carlisle ("The British Post Box"), but this one is much later: the lettering round the black base identifies it as a Handyside box, first designed in 1879 but originally without the royal monogram (see Baker).
